Port Definition

A logical channel. Port numbers are used by Ethernet protocols to distinguish between different logical channels on a computer's network interface. Application programs running on a computer each have a unique port number which enables them to communicate over a communications system. These logical ports mean that there is no need for a unique physical cable or connection to be attached to the computer for every separate application that uses the communications network.
